It looks like Representative Trent Franks R-AZ has caught the attention of the Freedom From Religion Foundation as well. As a result of Congressman Franks’ hosting of ‘town hall’ meetings in a Pentecostal church in Kingman, the FFRF has put out an action alert urging people to write to him and let them know that they disapprove of his actions. Unfortunately, Franks has made his religious inclination rather apparent over the years and I don’t see any letters swaying him in the slightest.
I completely agree with the FFRF’s stance that hosting these town hall meetings in a church where people roll on the floor and babble like buffoons is extremely inappropriate.
A church is the last place voters and constituents should have to engage with or listen to a political representative. Not only does this alienate and intimidate non-Christian, non-Pentacostal, and nonbelieving citizens, it also suggests that Congressman Franks, as a Congressional representative, is attempting to establish Christianity as the state’s preferred religion.
Oh, Franks would surely love that.
As I said in my previous post about Congressman Franks, he has shown a track record of pushing his silly religion into the public sphere. He has attempted to pass many resolutions regarding the Christian religion including the one trying to get Obama to declare 2010 as the year of the bible and his Christmas Resolution. Franks also thought this little farewell to the vile and despicable Jerry Falwell was an appropriate speech for the house.
As I said, I do not believe writing to Congressman Franks will deter him in the slightest, but do follow FFRF’s suggestions to write to the local papers. With any luck, we can elect someone more appropriate to the office next time around, despite the district’s strong conservative leanings.
